EARTHGRID, is a ventilated and shading facade. Having has base the image of the natural organization of the trees in the forest it comes out the idea of an identic composition with constructive purposes. The trunks, being a structural element of the tree, emerges in a structure that intends to be an integral part of a habitation or a public space. It contains in itself permeable characteristics that articulate with the space, the isolation and ventilation (working like a separation, a division between spaces).
This structure also promotes auto construction.
For the contribution of this factor we have the use of local feedstock (earth), technologies, digital media and mold process (CNC prototyping). However it is a structure that must be built on the spot conjugating traditional processes and with the technique of rammed earth.
The prototype was made with 1,50 m length by 1,40 m height. Fourteen plates of XPS (extruded polystyrene) were prototyped, with 10 cm height. Then they were stacked one by one, depending on the filling of the earth and joined by a tailgate.
Changes EARTHGRID (grasshopper):
- Curved or straight reference; interconnections between points (the largest source spacing is 4 points)
- structural adequacy;
- Radius dimension (top and bottom) – structural adequacy;
- height
It is intended that adjustments are made suiting the local requirements and user preferences.
Having also attention to structural adjustments necessary depending on the final design.
When working with earth there are some restrictions and constraints that must and can be calculated and optimized in Grasshopper.
